From Rescue to Home: Whisp’s Happy Ending

When 1-year-old Whisp arrived at Haven Humane, he was a heartbreaking sight—curled up in the corner of his kennel, too scared to move, and so matted he could barely see. He looked completely shut down.

But thanks to the care and compassion he received at Haven, Whisp’s story didn’t end there.

One of our kennel techs sat quietly beside him, offering patience instead of pressure. Slowly, Whisp inched forward and curled up in her lap. In that small, brave moment, he began to trust again.

Once he felt safe, Whisp was brought to our veterinary team for a full exam and care. His fur was matted tightly to the skin, trapping dirt and moisture and leaving his skin raw. After carefully shaving him down, our team discovered something even more troubling: foxtails.

These barbed grass seeds are incredibly dangerous. Whisp had them painfully embedded between his toes, deep in his ears, and even in both of his eyes—one of which had been sealed shut by infection and fur.

Thankfully, he was finally in a place where he could heal. Whisp received the wound care, antibiotics, pain relief, and gentle handling he needed to recover, both physically and emotionally.

Today, we’re thrilled to share that Whisp has found his forever home—with none other than our Volunteer of the Year, Julie Barker! Julie felt an instant connection and knew he belonged with her. She’s since given him a new name—Loki—a perfect fit for a spirited pup starting a brand-new life. Now Loki is safe, healthy, and finally living the life he deserves.

Thank you for caring about animals like Whisp. Every act of kindness makes stories like his possible.
